Kaine seeks to more than double small business contracts

RICHMOND, Va. Governor Tim Kaine wants the state to more than double the amount of business it gives to small businesses, including those owned by women and minorities.

Less than 15 percent of the state's purchases of goods and services went to such businesses in the last quarter of 2006. Kaine today signed an executive order establishing a goal of 40 percent.

Kaine said he's making it a priority to see that every company -- regardless of size and regardless of who owns it -- has an opportunity to compete for state government contracts.

The Department of Minority Business Enterprise will work with agencies and institutions with procurement authority on plans to reach the goal. Agency heads and procurement personnel will be judged on this area as part of their regular job performance review.
